Matthew’s Laws (2012)

THOUGHTS IN SPACE
Five animation sequences play a prominent role in this award-winning documentary about Matthew, an old school friend of director Marc Schmidt.

As the story develops. Matthew’s compulsively written notebooks appear to populate the physical space of his home – random thoughts, big theories, agenda appointments and medication dosages.

The vast notebook contents merge with the chaotic space in which he lives, blurring the boundaries between Matthijs’s physical and inner worlds.

Why did I decide to live inside my head?

Uniquely complex time notations – also created by Matthew – are used throughout the film in his own handwriting – which was also used as the film titles.
